The Alumni Affairs team along with Gamma Iota Sigma is proud to announce this year's 1st Alumni Newsletter. The Fall 2009 semester proved to be very successful with our various fund raising activities and our hosting of Gamma Iota Sigma’s Annual Management Conference. We have had some difficulties getting this newsletter out within the last few months; however, we have resolved the problems. We hope you enjoy this issue as it has many events and activities beginning this past September 2009!

Alumni Basketball Game
On Saturday, January 16, 2010, faculty, students and alumni joined together to watch the Temple Owls take on the University of Massachusetts. The event was held in the Fox School’s suite box in the Liacouras center. Alumni enjoyed seeing Alter Hall at Temple University for possibly the first time as well as a video that was put together highlighting the Sigma Chapter’s Fall 2009 semester.

Sigma Chapter's 8th Annual Alumni Golf Outing
These events serve a dual purpose, as they are a catalyst to improve our members’ career development, as well as fundraisers for our chapter’s future activities and continued philanthropy. One of our most successful industry networking and fund raising events is our annual Golf Outing. The Sigma Chapter’s 9th Annual Golf Outing took place on September 8th, 2009 at the Northampton Valley Country Club in Richboro, PA.

Our 2009-2010 Charity of Choice: Mack Walker Foundation
This past summer, one of our most valued colleagues in the Fox School of Business, Jackie Arnold, had her life change instantly, as she and her family suffered the tragic loss of her 23-year-old daughter, Arnesha. Only a few weeks after Arnesha delivered a beautiful baby girl, Makayla, she died of complications from influenza and double pneumonia. Leaving behind the brand new baby, as well as a 5-year-old son, Nashir, Jackie will step in to care for her wonderful grandchildren.

Haiti Bake Sale
On Tuesday, January 12, 2010 just before 5 p.m., a massive earthquake struck Haiti. The country was already one of the poorest in the world and when the earthquake hit, it was completely devastated. All across the globe people are contributing to the relief efforts, from celebrity telethons to charity events to individual donations. Already over $200 million has been donated to Haiti Relief. The Sigma Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma held a Bake Sale on Friday, January 29, 2010 in order to raise money to donate to Haiti.

Neighborhood Bikeworks Community Service Event
On November 7th, 2009, the Sigma Chapter participated in a community service event for Neighborhood Bike Works at 230 Salford Street, Philadelphia, PA. The purpose of the event was to help move the organization from one location to another and help clean their shop.

Philadelphia Brewery Community Service Event
On October 10, 2009, the Sigma Chapter participated in a community service event for the New Kensington Community Development Corporation at the Philadelphia Brewery. The purpose of the event was to help clean up the area around the Philadelphia Brewery located in the Kensington district of Philadelphia.

The 38th Annual International Management Conference
From Thursday, October 1st, 2009 to Saturday October 3rd, the Sigma Chapter hosted the 38th Annual Gamma Iota Sigma International Management Conference right here in the City of Brotherly Love. Around 250 members of over fifty chapters of Gamma flew and drove into Philadelphia on Thursday, October 1st to attend this conference, which was themed It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The conference began with a fantastic opening ceremony on Friday morning with a performance by the Temple ROTC Color Guard and the Temple University Marching Band, including the Sigma Chapter’s own Dominique Beadle. The band played the Canadian National Anthem, the United States’ National Anthem, and of couse, the Temple Fight Song.

Sigma Chapter Wins 10th Consecutive Bowers Award
The Sigma Chapter has done it again! For the tenth year in a row and for the fifteenth out of the past seventeen years the Sigma Chapter once again brought home the coveted Edison L. Bowers Award for the most outstanding chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma worldwide. The Edison L. Bowers Award was presented to the Sigma Chapter at the 38th Annual Gamma Iota Sigma International Management Conference held from October 1 – 3, 2009, at home in Philadelphia.

Health and Welfare Capstone Case Competition
Every year, RMI 4596, the capstone course for the Health and Welfare track of the Risk Management major, holds a case competition. The students are assigned to partner with employees of major companies in the industry, work on a client case, and then present their findings in front of their peers, professors, and industry representatives. This is a semester-long project, which is a major part of the class and is a great connection for students to the industry.

On October 15, 2009, the Sigma Chapter held the annual Graduating Senior Career Reception. The reception is the culmination of months worth of preparation and professional development. In order to attend the reception, seniors must complete the entire required "Road to the Resume Book" process, which includes an interview workshop, mock etiquette workshop, mock interview, and resume review.

On November 13, 2009, the Sigma Chapter held the annual Actuarial Science Internship Reception. Like the Graduating Seniors Career Reception, this reception is also the culmination of months worth of preparation and professional development. H. Wayne Snider Distinguished Guest Lecturer Series
On September 16, 2009, the Sigma Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma began its Fall 2009 H. Wayne Snider Distinguished Guest Lecturer Series with Don Lowman, a Managing Director in Towers Perrin’s Human Capital Group. This is the signature semester event of the Sigma Chapter, as key people within the Actuarial Science and Risk Management and Insurance industry from all over the United States come to Temple University to personally speak to our members.
On February 3rd, 2010, the Sigma Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma began its Spring 2010 H. Wayne Snider Distinguished Guest Lecturer Series with Susan Strung, the Director of Employee of Benefits & Services at Susquehanna International Group, LLP.

Professional Exam Completion
For students in the Risk Management and Actuarial Science fields, passing exams given by professional societies is of critical importance to their professional development. The Sigma Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma encourages our members to take these professional exams while still in college. These rigorous exams are given by various educational organizations in the Risk Management and Actuarial Science fields, and the Sigma Chapter is proud of our members who have completed this difficult task. These include exams for the CEBS, CPCU and ARM designations, as well as actuarial exams sponsored by the Society of Actuaries.

Halloween Happy Hour
On October 29th, 2009, Gamma mixed and mingled with members from American Marketing Association, Financial Management Association, and Beta Alpha Psi to celebrate Halloween. Students arrived in costume to the Draught Horse on Temple’s campus to compete for best-dressed male and female and also to come together to root for the Philadelphia Phillies in game two of the World Series.

Sigma Chapter Turns 29!
The Sigma Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma celebrated its 29th birthday on Friday, November 20th, 2009 by giving free cake and cupcakes to Temple students, professors, employees, and visitors in the lobby of Alter Hall from 11 AM to 3 PM. Everyone was very excited to receive pieces of the dozen specialty Sigma Chapter sheet cakes and take part in the celebration of Sigma’s chartering, which took place on November 21st, 1980. The Alter Hall Lobby was decked out with black and gold balloons to symbolize the colors of Gamma Iota Sigma.
